Just because it’s Halloween and just because I love horror films, in no particular order, here’s a list of my favourite frightening foodie moments
*warning, may contain unapologetically graphic descriptions, images and video clips*
1. Hannibal (2001) – Krendler’s last meal
It’s no surprise this film makes the list. This scene showing the demise of the misogynistic Krendler is probably one of the most iconic in horror film history. And given the distaste we’re conditioned to feel towards Krendler’s character, it’s safe to say we don’t feel sorry for him either.
2. Evil Dead (1981) – Possessed friend finds a tasty snack
For it’s time, this scene of the possessed friend chewing her own arm off in front of a horrified Ash was impressively gruesome. You could argue it still holds its own today.
3. Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) – Sucky, sucky
Watching poor old corpsey Grandpa (who struggles to eat solid human flesh) sucking Sally’s finger scarred me for life.
4. Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) – Grandpa’s a hitter
My ol’ friend Grandpa back again, this time, demonstrating his poor hand-eye co-ordination at the table – and not with a knife and fork.
5. Se7en (1995) – Gluttony
Not technically a horror film, but Se7en’s exaggerated depiction of what all food bloggers are like on the inside (some on the out) is pretty gruesome.
6. Beetlejuice (1988) – Prawn cocktail
Day-oh! Not scary exactly, but it’s definitely one of the most iconic dinner scenes of any horror movie. If you haven’t seen the end it might make you jump.
7. Rosemary’s Baby (1968) – Drugged by dessert
Rosemary’s Baby will make you wary of eating food prepped by anyone else. I couldn’t find an eating clip, so here’s one showing the after affect.
9. The Exorcist (1973) – Pea soup
Of course! Needs no introduction.
10. Poltergeist (1982) – Steak night
This could be any guy. It’s Friday night, his girlfriend’s gone out with her friends, so he decides to make steak for dinner… until he hallucinates and peels his own face off.
Can you think of any more to add to the list? Let me know!
