Before I’m accused of plugging my employer’s clients, I have to assure you that The Smoke Haus is totally deserving of eat of the week. Originating in my home town (Swansea) and now open in Cardiff with plans to expand, it’s certainly doing well for itself.
The Smoke Haus prides itself on portion size, but actually the quality of the food is great, too. Brioche burger buns, locally sourced whole chicken breasts in crispy batter and thick, juicy steaks cooked to your liking – and they aren’t afraid of requests for rare. Not forgetting the sides of maple syrup and mac ‘n’ cheese which tip it into American cliche.
Then there’s the music! If you grew up in the 90s you’ll be taken on a trip down memory lane and spend your entire meal remembering the days of moshing out to Blink 182, Megadeth and Sum41. Those were the days…
Despite the size of the portions, The Smoke Haus’s appeal isn’t limited to man dates for big hairy bikers – I went with my family for a birthday meal and my 70-year-old grandmother thoroughly enjoyed the food.
I’ve tried the chicken and waffles before (and it was lush), but this time I decided to have one of their monstrous burgers. I ordered the Southern Comfort; brioche bun cheeseburger stacked high with a whole coated chicken breast, bacon, fried onions and garlic mayonnaise. I added extra cheese, just because. Of course it beat me, as it was as big as my head, but while it lasted it was epic.
Big isn’t always better, but it certainly helps.
